Grade Score Marking by section for an Assessment

When creating exams on EP that need Grade Score Marking, you're able to mark exams by section. This article explains how to achieve this, and make your marking experience easier!

This is particularly helpful for those creating senior NCEA exams on EP.

Set up the assessment

Navigate to the Library tab, then within the My Content (or My School's Content) area, click Create new > Exam.

Change the grading options

Click the three dot menu in the top right, then Grading options.

Click to change the method, and choose the NCEA - Grade Score Marking option. Confirm your changes.

Set up sections

Now, start setting up the exam/paper. Add a new section for every main question, then add your questions within each of their relevant sections.

Rename your sections to match your overall paper by clicking on the section heading and editing the title in the centre of the page.

Change the grading rule

Once your questions have been added, you’ll see that each individual question has GSM next to it. We're now going to change this, so that questions in a section are marked together with one score.

Click a section heading (e.g. Question 2), then click Assign Grade in the bottom left corner.

Click the Mark all questions as a section box, then Set grade to confirm.

Once complete, you’ll see that the GSM label has moved to the section header.

This means all questions (e.g. 2a and 2b) will now be marked together as one N0-E8 grade. Repeat this step for all sections.

Finishing the exam

At the end of the exam, you're able to use your scores to add them up and set a final grade based on your Cut Scores.

You will also have a feedback box if you wish to add the overall score for visibility to your students.
