Add Classes

Learn how to manually create a new class in a few guided steps, followed by customising the avatar and adding students all within the one flow.

There are three main ways to enrol classes on EP:

  • Individually, one class at a time, using the guided class creation experience described below.

  • In bulk, via our Enrolment Portal.

  • Using a rostering integration supported by our platform and enabled by an admin at your school.

This guide specifically walks through creating a class one by one, to view more information about our Enrolment Portal and supported rostering integrations, check out the help guides linked above.

Creating a class

Creating an individual class is a short, guided flow. You'll name your class and set its level, subject and academic year, optionally customise its avatar, and choose how you'd like to add students, all in one place.

Where to start

You can open the class creation flow from any of these places:

  • The Create class button on your My classes page or your Home page.

If your school uses Google Classroom

Schools connected to Google Classroom will see an extra first step when creating a class, letting you choose how to proceed:

  • Sign into Google - takes you into the Google Classroom import experience to sync classes across from Google.

  • Manually create class - continues to the Class details step to set your class up by hand.

If your school isn't connected to Google Classroom, you'll go straight to the Class details step.

1. Class details

Enter the details that describe your class. A live preview on the right updates as you go, so you can see how the class will appear.

  1. Class name - type a name for your class (up to 100 characters).

  2. Level - select the year or grade level(s) that apply. You can choose more than one.

  3. Subject - select the subject(s) for the class. Choose a level first; the subject dropdown stays disabled until you do and will prompt you to “Select a level…”. You can search and select multiple subjects.

  4. Academic year - defaults to the current year. You can switch it to the next year if you're setting up ahead of time.

Good to know

Because the subject you pick decides what content your students can access, the Subject list is drawn from the subjects your school subscribes to, with your subscribed subjects shown at the top. Changing the Level clears any subject you'd already chosen, so set the level first. The levels and academic years you see match your school's academic year format.

When all details are filled in, the Create button becomes active. Click Create to make your class and move on to customising its avatar.

2. Customise your avatar

Give your class a look that's easy to spot at a glance. This step is optional - you can accept the defaults and keep moving.

  • Initials - a default is set for you based on the class name. Edit it if you like (up to two characters).

  • Colour - pick a colour for the avatar from the available options.

The preview reflects your chosen initials and colour. Click Next to continue - any changes you make here are saved to your class.

3. Add students

Finally, choose how you'd like to add students to your new class. There are three ways to do it:

  • Set up a join code - generates a code your students use to add themselves. This takes you to the class's People tab and opens the join code details for you to follow.

  • Bulk import students - takes you to our Enrolment Portal with your new class already selected. Download our template, add your students details to the file and upload this to add all students at once.

  • Individually - takes you to the class's People tab and opens the Add students form so you can enter students one by one.

Once added, students can access any content your class is subscribed to and see any tasks or assessments you've assigned.

Not ready to add students yet? Choose I'll add students later to close the flow and return to the page you started from. You can always add students later from the People tab of the class.

Need to set up more than one class? Choose Create another class to jump straight back to a fresh Class details step and go again.

How does my class's level and subject affect what students can access?

When creating a class, you set one or more levels and subjects that best match your class in real life. The subjects you apply determine what content your students can access - as long as your school has an active subscription for that level and subject. For more on how this works, see Subscription management.

Making further changes

Need to edit your class after creating it? You can update its details - including name, level, subject and avatar from the class Settings space. See Updating class details for a full breakdown of the options.
