EP STEALTH Challenge 2021

    In 2021, EP is once again running our cross-curricular teacher challenge - the 'STEALTH' Challenge. As part of this challenge, EP is inviting teachers to submit a cross-curricular challenge question that links to the theme 'Food: Different By Design' that will become the 2021 Student Challenge question in Term 4.

    Who can take part?

    Any teacher from any subject across all Australian and New Zealand schools.

    Monday September 13 - Friday October 8.

    What prizes can I win?

    The best question submitted will become the Student Challenge question and turned into an EP lesson that is hosted in our Cross-Curricular subject space for teachers to use with their students. You will also win $500 towards conference fees of your choice.

    Does the question have to relate to a specific theme?

    Yes, the theme for the 2021 Teacher & Student Challenge is Food: Different  By Design

    What does that theme include? Can you give me some more ideas?

    Teachers can incorporate any the following ideas, but they are definitely not limited within their creativity:

      • Genetically modified foods
      • Sustainable agriculture
      • Maintaining biodiversity
      • From paddock to plate
      • Food as fuel
      • Food production technologies
      • Environmentally friendly food packaging
      • Fertilisers
      • Food waste and inequality
      • Healthy lifestyles

    What exactly are you looking for when you say a ‘Challenge’ question?

    The type of questions we are looking for will:

    • Involve as many of the different subject areas listed - Science, Technology, English, Maths, Languages & Humanities.
    • Be multistep and complex.
    • Require students to be creative and come up with a solution to a real-world problem.
    • Be a scenario-based question.
    • Be accessible for all students, while still being challenging and thought provoking.
    • Require students to put in a considerable amount of work to complete - the Challenge will be open for all of Term 3 for the students to work on.
    • Incorporate a range of activities - utilising the various features of the EP Content Library, research, model making/designing culminating with the students being required to upload their final solution to the problem posed in whichever format they wish (explanation video, report, photostory, etc).

    Can you give me an example of a good student challenge question that incorporates what you are looking for?

    Here is an of a example challenge that meets a range of the criteria above:

    • What happens when we understand how farmers use technologies?
      Your challenge is to design a fencing system to keep sheep and cattle safe and keep feral animals out of a cattle and sheep farm. Your design needs to allow for the occasional entrance of farm vehicles. Remember, foxes and rabbits like to dig under fences and cats are good climbers. Kangaroos also often jump over farm fences. Your design needs to suggest ways of preventing these animals from entering the paddocks. You need to draw sketches to show your ideas and use labels to clearly show each feature. Then, decide on a solution and complete a scale drawing of it. Make your scale model and write an explanation detailing how the fence will be effective. Then, share and explain your design as part of a TV show, in which you explain the key features of your design or technology and pitch your fence design to possible investors.
      Your submission will need to include:
      - research into your materials chosen to explain their suitability
      - a hand-drawn scaled diagram of your fence design
      - a cost analysis of your design to fence a farm with a 1000m perimeter fence 
      - photographs of your scale model model 
      - a 500 word explanation that details how your fence design will be effective
      - your 90-120 second video pitch to possible investors

    Can I submit more than one question?

    Yes, you may submit as many questions as you like.

    Can I work with a colleague?

    Yes, we encourage cross-subject collaboration between teachers to come up with a challenge question. Please note, if your question is chosen as the winning question you will need to divide the prize between the number of collaborators.

    I don’t know anything about Languages, Humanities or English, can I still contribute a question?

    Of course you can. Just be mindful we are looking for a challenge question that is going to cover as many subjects that are offered by EP so it might be worth seeing if you can collaborate with a colleague who is confident in these subject areas.

    Is there a word limit to the challenge?

    No there isn’t.

    How much detail should I provide in my challenge question?

    Your challenge question should be easy to follow by students - they should be able to read the question and see which elements they need to work towards. If we choose your question to be our student challenge question, we may reach out for clarification if necessary.

    How does the Student Challenge work?

    In Term 4, all students from Year 5 and up will be invited to take part in the Student Challenge via their teachers. Like other EP competitions, teachers will be required to register their interest in the Challenge to ensure that students are set up with the correct licence for the subject the resources will be available through. Students will then need to be assigned the Challenge Lesson so that they can work through the various tasks for the Challenge and then upload their submission through a Tasks & Homework activity created by their teacher. The team will then work through judging the submissions and determine the student winner at the end of Term 3. A range of prizes will be awarded based on age groups as well as overall school entries.
