Ideas for using Languages in Action version 2.0 in your class

Languages in Action 2.0 makes a much larger volume of learning material available to you and your students, enabling you to effectively differentiate your classroom combined with the powerful functionality in the Control Panel.

Here are some suggestions for using the new material in your classroom:

Spread it out

  • If you are assigning the whole unit of work (all 8 smart lessons), remember that you'll need to allocate a considerable amount of time for this as it's not possible to complete this inside a one hour block. 
  • Each section in a smart lesson can be individually assigned, so consider assigning a couple of listening and reading tasks during each session for them to practise their skills in a relevant context. 
  • You might choose not to assign the grammar lessons, especially at beginner level, if you would rather have grammar become a focus later on in the learning journey. Try assigning the grammar lessons only as an extension task for higher level students.

Assign different activities to different students

  • Different sections of each lesson could be assigned to different groups of students. For example, within the listening and reading comprehension material, you might assign weaker groups of students the texts and questions in the first half of the lesson which are shorter and have simpler questions and for the stronger students you might assign the whole section. Make Learning Stations

  • You might use the different sections of the unit as learning stations which students could work on in groups and help each other. They could rotate around each section in their learning groups and support each other's learning which gives the teacher the chance to work 1-1 with the students. 

Flip the classroom

  • Assign the learning material to students to complete for homework before you begin the unit to promote a flipped classroom environment. 

Make an assessment

  • The material in any of the sections can be set as a formative or summative assessment activity. You might decide to use some parts of each section for in-class learning tasks, and keep some aside to set as an assessment at the end of that unit using our Quick Tests.

Get competitive

  • You could create a competition based on just the content in a specific unit to encourage the students to complete each section of work in a particular unit.  
  • Students can compete in an Education Perfect Dash at the end of the introductions,  the vocabulary practice section, the reading comprehension section and the grammar sections. This is a great way to motivate them to get through the lesson.
