How does earning points for my students work?

Students can earn points for learning and revising Education Perfect content.

Lists

Translation and Spelling Lists

For Translation and Spelling Lists, you earn points by learning words, which means answering a word correctly three times in a row (or twice, if you don't make a mistake). This earns you one star, which is equal to one point.

Fact Lists

For Fact Lists, you only have to get a question right twice (or once, if you don't make a mistake). This earns you a star, which is equal to one point.

Unlocking additional stars

The scoring system also rewards you for revising the words you have already learnt. The day after you first learn a word/item, you can revise the same word/item to earn yourself a second star. Each new star gives you another point. Stars can be earned after increasing periods of time, as illustrated in the following table:

Stars Points When can I earn this star?
1
Immediately
★★
2
 The next day.
★★★
3
One week after scoring two stars.
★★★★
4
One month after scoring three stars.
★★★★★
5
Three months after scoring four stars.
★★★★★+
5+
An additional star every six months after accumulating five stars.

Every 6 months after earning 5 stars you are able to earn an additional star. For Translation Lists, you can do this in each of the four language learning modes. For example, in French, the four learning modes are:

  • French text to English text
  • English text to French text
  • Spoken French to French text
  • Spoken French to English text

Because of the self-marked nature of the exercises, students don't receive any points for completing work on vocabulary lists in Speaking Mode.

When a new star is unlocked in a list you've previously completed, the progress earned in the list will change, indicating that more stars are available to be earned in this list. This should not impact progress in tasks set by your teacher. When new stars are available, they will be indicated by a dot in the Progress column of the list.

Smart Lessons

Earning Points

Smart Lessons give you points for answering questions correctly; you only have to get a question right twice (or once, if you don't make a mistake). They also give you bonus points for completing sections of a lesson. Different sections are worth different amounts of bonus points, to ensure that students' work on questions is rewarded.

Because of the self-marked nature of the exercises, students don't receive any points for completing work in Long Answer sections.

Section Type
Bonus Points Allocated
Information No bonus points
Translation  1 bonus point for every 10 questions in the section
Quiz  1 bonus point for every 10 questions in the section
Skill Mastery 1 bonus point for every question students need to answer correctly to complete the section (see  Bonus points in Skill Sections below)
Long Answer No bonus points

Bonus points in Skill Sections
Skill sections adapt to students' individual needs; if students answer all the questions correctly, they're able to move on to the next section more quickly than someone who struggles. Bonus points are allocated based on the number of repetitions needed to move to the next section. In this example, a student needs to answer five questions correctly and will get five bonus points for completing the section.

Revision Points

The scoring system also rewards you for revising the questions you have already learnt. Revision Points can be earned after increasing periods of time, as illustrated in the following table:

Points When can I earn Smart Lesson points?
1
Immediately
2
 The next day.
3
One week after scoring two points.
4
One month after scoring three points.
5
Three months after scoring four points.
5+
An additional star every six months after accumulating five points.

If Revision Points are available, they can be earned via Dash, a Task, or independent work. When earning Revision Points through Dash, each playthrough of Dash can earn you up to ten points maximum. That means if you have more than ten Revision Points available, you will have to play through Dash multiple times to earn all available Revision Points.

For more information on what Dash is, you can read through our article What is Education Perfect Dash?

Bonus points can only be earned once. You will not earn them again when revising your Smart Lesson.

Competitions

Within competitions (such as the World Series), points are earned differently from how they're earned on the rest of the system.

By default, students competing can complete content they have already learnt to earn points for the competition. This is because the competitions are automatically in Revision mode.

If you'd prefer for students to only earn points for learning new content in a competition you've created, you'll want to select Learning mode.
